Cosmic Alliances: Understanding Planetary Friendships (Maitri)

Imagine a king walking into a room full of his loyal generals. He feels powerful, respected, and comfortable. Now imagine that same king walking into a room full of rebellious peasants who despise him. He feels anxious, restricted, and defensive. This is exactly how planets operate in Vedic Astrology, governed by the rules of Maitri (Friendship).

Naisargika Maitri (Natural Friendship)

Every planet has natural friends, natural enemies, and planets they consider neutral. These relationships are based on their core nature. Generally, the "Deva" (divine) planets are friends with each other, and the "Danava" (demon/material) planets are friends with each other.

• The Deva Camp: Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter. They value truth, soul growth, action, and dharma.
• The Danava Camp: Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu. They value material success, pleasure, structure, and worldly reality.
• Mercury: The Prince plays both sides depending on the situation, but naturally aligns more with the Danava camp (Venus/Saturn).

If the Sun (King) is placed in the sign of Leo, he is in his own home. If he is placed in Sagittarius (ruled by Jupiter, a friend), he is a happy guest in a friend's house. But if the Sun is placed in Capricorn (ruled by Saturn, his bitter enemy), he is miserable and stressed.

Tatkalika Maitri (Temporary Friendship)

Vedic astrology adds a brilliant layer of nuance. While natural friendships are eternal, Temporary Friendships are formed based on exactly where the planets are sitting in your specific birth chart.

The Rule: Any planet sitting in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, or 12th house from another planet becomes its temporary friend. Any planet sitting in the same house (conjunction), or the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th house from it, becomes its temporary enemy.

Why? Because planets that are too close (conjunction) fight for the same space. Planets that are opposite (7th) stare each other down. But planets in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, and 12th houses are adjacent enough to support each other without stepping on toes.

Panchadha Maitri: The Five-Fold Friendship

To determine exactly how a planet feels in a sign, an astrologer combines the Natural and Temporary friendships to get the final result:

• Natural Friend + Temporary Friend = Great Friend (Ati Mitra)
• Natural Friend + Temporary Enemy = Neutral (Sama)
• Natural Neutral + Temporary Friend = Friend (Mitra)
• Natural Enemy + Temporary Friend = Neutral (Sama)
• Natural Enemy + Temporary Enemy = Bitter Enemy (Ati Shatru)

A planet in a "Great Friend's" sign will easily yield its best results. A planet in a "Bitter Enemy's" sign will struggle, cause delays, and require immense remedies to function properly.
