Congratulations! You have completed the foundation of Vedic Astrology. Looking at a chart for the first time with its myriad of planets, numbers, and lines can be overwhelming. The key is to have a structured workflow. Do not look at everything at once.
The 5-Step Chart Reading Workflow
Step 1: Analyze the Ascendant (Lagna)
Before you look at any other planet, look at the 1st house. What is the Ascendant sign? This dictates the entire layout of the chart and determines which planets are beneficial or malefic for this person. Are there any planets sitting in the 1st house? If so, their energy will heavily color the person's identity.
Step 2: Find the Lagna Lord
Find the planet that rules the Ascendant sign. Where is it sitting? The house it occupies shows the primary focus of the person's life (e.g., if in the 10th house, their life is about career). What sign is it in? Is it exalted, debilitated, or in a friend's sign? The strength of the Lagna Lord determines the overall strength of the entire chart.
Step 3: Check the Luminaries (Sun and Moon)
Where is the Moon (the mind)? Is it aspected by benefics like Jupiter, or squeezed by malefics like Saturn and Rahu? A strong Moon indicates a calm mind that can handle stress. Where is the Sun (the soul/ego)? Its placement shows where the person seeks authority and respect.
Step 4: Assess Specific Houses based on the Question
If the person asks about marriage, go directly to the 7th house. What sign is there? Who is the Lord of the 7th house, and where is it sitting? Are any planets sitting in the 7th house, or aspecting it? Apply this logic to any topic (2nd/11th for wealth, 10th for career).
Step 5: Determine Timing (Dasha & Gochar)
Look at the Vimshottari Dasha table. What Mahadasha and Antardasha is the person currently running? The themes of those planets will be the primary focus of their life right now. Finally, check the current transits of Jupiter and Saturn to see which natal houses they are activating today.
The Golden Rule of Reading
Never make a prediction based on one placement.
Astrology is about convergence. If the 7th house has a difficult planet, but the 7th Lord is exalted, and Jupiter is aspecting the 7th house... the positive influences outvote the negative. You must weigh the pros and cons like a judge in a courtroom.
