Tithi: The Lunar Day of Your Birth

A beautiful elegant depiction of the moon's phases overlapping with an ancient golden birth chart

Most people know their Sun sign, and many know their Moon sign. But there is a crucial third factor in Vedic Astrology that dictates the emotional "theme" of your entire life: the Tithi, or the specific Lunar Day you were born on.

Tithi is calculated by measuring the exact mathematical angle between the Sun and the Moon at the moment of your birth. Because the Moon represents the mind and the Sun represents the soul, the Tithi reveals the deep psychological relationship between your ego and your emotions.

The 30 Lunar Phases

A lunar month consists of 30 Tithis: 15 during the Waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha) and 15 during the Waning Moon (Krishna Paksha). Each of these 30 phases creates a drastically different personality type:

Amavasya (New Moon)

Born when there is zero light in the sky. These individuals are deeply introspective, incredibly resilient, and often carry significant ancestral karma. They are forced to rely entirely on their own internal compass because the external world offers little emotional support.

Purnima (Full Moon)

Born when the sky is fully illuminated. These individuals are extremely emotionally expressive, highly creative, and crave deep, meaningful connections. Their lives are lived "out in the open," and they often achieve significant public success or fame.

Ashtami (The 8th Day - Half Moon)

Born precisely at the halfway point between New and Full. This creates a deeply conflicted but brilliant mind. The person constantly wrestles between their material ambitions (Sun) and their spiritual, emotional needs (Moon). They are the ultimate problem solvers.

Tithi Dosha: The Flawed Days

Certain Tithis are considered naturally challenging, known as Rikta (Empty) Tithis (the 4th, 9th, and 14th days of the lunar cycle). If you are born on a Rikta Tithi, you may often feel that your efforts yield empty results or that success slips through your fingers at the last second.

However, understanding your Tithi allows you to apply specific remedies. By honoring the specific ruling deity of your birth Tithi (for example, Ganesha for the 4th day, or Shiva for the 14th day), you can permanently unlock the blocked emotional energy in your chart.
