Sidereal vs Tropical: Why Vedic Astrology is Different

If you’ve ever had your Vedic chart read, you might have been shocked to find out that your Sun sign changed. This is due to the difference between the Sidereal and Tropical zodiacs.
Most Western astrology uses the Tropical zodiac, which is fixed to the seasons. It assumes that the Spring Equinox always marks the beginning of Aries. However, due to a phenomenon called the "Precession of the Equinoxes," the earth's orientation to the stars actually shifts by about 1 degree every 72 years.
The Astronomically Accurate Map
Vedic Astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac, which accounts for this shift (known as the Ayanamsa). This means that a Vedic chart shows the actual astronomical positions of the planets against the constellations as they appear in the sky *today*.
Because the Sidereal zodiac is about 24 degrees behind the Tropical zodiac, many people find that their "Vedic Sign" is actually the sign immediately preceding their "Western Sign."
Why it Matters for Accuracy
By using the Sidereal zodiac, Vedic Astrology remains tethered to the actual physical reality of the cosmos. This allows for the high degree of precision in timing events through the Dasha system and ensures that the planetary influences being analyzed are truly what is happening in the heavens.
