Navigating Retrogrades: Myths vs. Reality
By Stellar Compass
•May 10, 2026
"Mercury is in retrograde!" is the most common excuse for everything from missed emails to broken relationships. But what is actually happening?
Astronomically, a planet is never actually moving backward. It is an optical illusion caused by the relative speeds of Earth and another planet in their orbits. In astrology, however, this "backward" motion signifies an internalizing of that planet's energy.
The "Re" Rule
Instead of fearing retrogrades, think of them as a time for any activity starting with "Re":
- Reflection: Looking back at your recent decisions.
- Revision: Editing your plans or projects.
- Reassessment: Are you still on the right path?
- Renewal: Clearing out the old to make space for the new.
Not All Retrogrades are Equal
While Mercury Retrograde happens 3-4 times a year and affects communication, other retrogrades are much more significant. A **Venus Retrograde** (happening every 18 months) often brings back past lovers or forces a reassessment of your self-worth. A **Mars Retrograde** can feel like your engine has stalled, requiring you to find new ways to motivate yourself.
What to Check
If you were born with retrograde planets in your birth chart (called Vakri planets), these transit periods actually feel "normal" or even empowering for you! Knowing your unique celestial blueprint is the only way to navigate these periods with grace.
